McCoy: forced to choose, I'd take Wilbert's record
Looks like LeSean McCoy will lead the NFL in rushing and break Wilbert Montgomery's single-season franchise rushing record this season. What if he had to choose just one? McCoy said he'd go with Wilbert.
LeSean McCoy, named NFC Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday for his performance against the Bears, is in good shape to win the NFL rushing title and break Wilbert Montgomery's single-season franchise rushing record this Sunday at Dallas.
McCoy has 1,476 rushing yards, 36 yards behind Montgomery's 1979 mark and 189 ahead of Kansas City's Jamaal Charles, who is second in the NFL this year. He ought to nail down both milestones Sunday, but McCoy was asked in a Tuesday news conference, what if he had to choose between the honors? Which is more important?
"I don't know; I'm gettin' 'em both," McCoy said initially. Then he stopped to reflect. "I'd say the franchise. Because this is the team I play for. They drafted me. I signed a nice contract (last year). I'm here for a while. I think kind of keeping it here, with the franchise, is something special."
Like many of his coaches and teammates, McCoy said the Eagles are "a totally different team" than the group that lost to Dallas, 17-3, at Lincoln Financial Field Oct. 20. McCoy was held to 55 yards on 18 carries.
"I think it was more just the Eagles" than what the Cowboys did defensively, McCoy said. "I didn't read well, I didn't play well."
