Senior Bowl weigh-in notes, and healthy scratches

Day 1 of the Senior Bowl began with the weigh-ins, which are highly awkward, and must be embarrassing for many of the prospects. A large stage is set up, and 100+ prospects walk up one at a time, dressed only in boxer briefs to be measured for height and weight. Their bodies are also scrutinized by scouts and draftniks, with comments like "bubble butt" (that's actually considered a good thing), "flabby," etc. One prospect last year was nicknamed "third trimester" by one of the writers, because he had a rather large belly.

In the past, the prospects were lined up about 20 deep off stage, where they could be seen by the entire crowd, which is a few hundred people deep. It looked a little bit like this:

This year, there was a huge partition that blocked off the view from the line, so the players' exposure to the crowd was limited to their minute of fame on stage. Here are some of the most notable weigh-in notes.

• Chip Kelly prefers QBs who have big hands. Nick Foles' hands are 10 5/8". He had the biggest hands of any QB at the 2012 Combine. Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas had 10 3/4" hands. Miami QB Stephen Morris came in at 10 1/8". Then there was a big dropoff to Clemson's Tajh Boyd, who had 9 3/8" hands. Boyd measured in at just under 6'1. He measured in at 6'0 3/4, 222 pounds. Boyd could be an interesting option for the Eagles if he slides to the 3rd round.

• Georgia QB Aaron Murray is just over 6'0. He's 6'0 3/8, 201 pounds. That's not good for him. He was previously listed at 6'1, 208. Murray can't play due to an injury, but credit him for participating in as much as he can at the Senior Bowl.

• Washington State S Deone Bucannon is jacked up. His muscles have muscles. He's probably the most muscular player at the Senior Bowl. 6'0, 7/8, 216 pounds. Bucannon is a big hitter, but he'll be a guy I watch this week to see if he can cover.

• Minnesota DT Ra'Shede Hageman is a big and solid at 6'6, 318. Very good player.

• Georgia Tech OLB Jeremiah Attaochu measured in at 6'3 1/4, and 252 pounds. Scouts sitting among us seemed to be fired up (in a good way) about his weight, which is nice size for an edge pass rusher in 3-4.

• Princeton DT Caraun Reid impressed scouts with his strong, stout build.

• Oklahoma play making WR Jalen Saunders is the smallest player here. He weighed in at 5'8 3/4, 164 pounds.

• Florida State LB Telvin Smith raised his arms in victory as he walked off the stage after he was measured. That doesn't really mean anything... just thought it was funny. Smith was a LB at FSU, but from his build, it's clear he'll be a safety at the next level. He measured in at 6'2 7/8, 218 pounds.

Healthy scratches

The Senior Bowl specifically notes the prospects who were invited, but declined to compete. Those players were as follows:

• Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State

• Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State

• Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State

• Lamarcus Joyner, CB/S, Florida State

• Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo

• Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M

• A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama

• C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama

• Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford.

Several of the above players aren't so highly regarded that they should be skipping the Senior Bowl, like McCarron, Hyde, Skov, and others. Selfishly, I would have loved to have seen Joyner, Gilbert, Dennard, Mack, and Mosley compete in person.

There were 20 players who were invited, but cannot compete because they are injured.

We'll have more later with notes from today's practices.
