Mason says relationship with Berube is strong
Flyers goalie Steve Mason wanted to make sure that everybody knew that he and coach Craig Berube are not only on the same page, but have a strong relationship.
There were suggestions after the Flyers fired goaltender coach Jeff Reese last month that Berube and Mason had a strained relationship. Mason was close with Reese and credited him with helping turn his career around.
Yet when Mason was asked about his relationship with Berube on Wednesday, the Flyers goalie couldn't have been more complimentary.
"Chief has been great with me," Mason said, calling Berube by his nickname. "There been a lot of speculation in papers and everything but Chief and I have never had a problem. I think we have a great relationship."
Mason said since Reese left, the communication between the two has grown.
"Since Reeser has been gone we have actually had more of an open line of communication just because we have had to," Mason said. "There has been no goalie coach to relay the messages so Chief and I talk daily as to where I am at just to make sure I am getting what I need in order to get ready for the games."
Mason then added, "As far as a goaltender-coach relationship goes, I think it is great."
There has been plenty of public speculation concerning Berube's job status since the Flyers have missed the postseason. Mason hopes the Flyers strong run in April where they are 3-0-1, will help Berube.
"Chief is extremely well liked in this locker room," Mason said. "It is unfortunate the way this season has unfolded in terms of position we are in. Whether this stretch can change the course of what might happen in summer time, who knows, but guys are playing to definitely finish the season strong. Chief is well liked and hopefully we can help him."
