ST. LOUIS --- The Phillies reinstated Domonic Brown from the disabled list and optioned him to triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, a day after manager Ryne Sandberg said he wasn't sure the rightfielder was ready to face major league pitching.
Brown, back from left Achilles tendinitis, was just 5 for 36 with a double and three RBIs over nine rehab games with the IronPigs. He was 5 for 17 in six games with single-A Clearwater to start his rehab assignment.
The Phillies had flexibility with Brown because the 2013 All-Star has minor league options remaining. Brown, 27, is making $2.6 million in his first year of arbitration eligibility.
"Maybe it's just not enough at-bats," Sandberg said of Brown before Monday night's 4-1 Phillies win over the Cardinals. "He's had some fly-ball outs. He just hasn't connected and hasn't hit for average [at the rate] you'd like to see."
