Phillies knock off Braves, 5-3

The Phillies won 5-3.

GONZALEZ DONE: Severino Gonzalez finishes his day with three scoreless innings, four hits, two strikeouts, no walks. He isn't an elite prospect, but the Phillies realize that they aren't the deepest rotation in the world, and Gonzalez didn't do anything to hurt his chances of getting a spot start at some point this season.

HOWARD AND RUF BACK TO BACK: Ryan Howard took Foltynewicz yard with one out in the third inning and Darin Ruf followed by sending the next pitch over the wall in left-center. 3-0 Phillies.

PHILLIES 2nd INNING: Some control problems on the part of Foltynewicz. Chris Nelson led off with a double to right field then scored on a single by Brian Bogusevic, who has had a solid spring thus far. Foltynewicz walked the pitcher and eventually loaded the bases but the Phillies managed just one run. They now lead 1-0.

BRAVES 1st INNING: Severino Gonzalez made his big league camp debut and got a big assist from Darin Ruf on a bloop single by Jace Peterson. Ruf caught Eric Young Jr. taking a wide turn at second base and threw behind him in time for the out. Young had reached base on a single through the right side. Gonzalez finished working out of the jam by getting Nick Markakis to ground into a double play on an 0-2 breaking pitch. 13 pitches and 10 strikes for Gonzalez in the first. He's sitting 89-91 on the stadium radar gun.

It's an overcast day here in Lake Buena Vista, the happiest manufactured place on Earth. Pitching prospect Severino Gonzalez will face the Braves in another exciting Grapefruit League tilt. It should be a good one as the Phillies lead off with Jordan Danks, Andres Blanco and Cord Phelps against Mike "Autocorrect" Foltynewicz.
