Pat Burrell to join Phillies Wall of Fame

The Phillies announced on Thursday that former outfielder Pat Burrell will be inducted to the team’s Wall of Fame on July 31. Burrell played nine seasons with the Phillies and helped guide them to their first postseason trip in 14 seasons and first World Series title in 28 years.

Burrell’s 251 home runs are fourth in team history. He hit .257 and drove in 827 runs as a Phillie. The Phillies drafted him No. 1 overall in 1998. The former college star at Miami debuted in May of 2000. His double in the seventh inning of Game 5 of the 2008 World Series led to the eventual winning run.

Here’s a look at five of Burrell’s best moments as a Phillie:

Debut (May 24, 2000) - Then a first baseman, Burrel joined the Phillies in May. He went 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs. He drove in an insurance run in the ninth inning on a triple off Billy Wagner, who would become a nemists later in his career. Burrell’s triple went deep to center field for his first-career RBI. Hit to any other part of the park and it would have been a homer.

Walk-off home run against Atlanta (April 10, 2002) - It was Burrell’s second walk-off homer in four days and it was the start of his finest season. Burrell hit 37 home runs and drove in 116 runs. The Phillies finished 80-81, but the nucleus of the team seemed to come together around Burrell and Jimmy Rollins.

Walk-off against San Francisco (May 2, 2008) - It was Burrell’s first walk-off homer since 2002 and it lifted the Phillies to an early-season win in a year where everything seemed to go their way. The ball raced out to left field and Burrell finished with his second-straight 30 homer season.

Against the Mets - Burrell hit 42 career home runs against the Mets, more than he hit against any other team. He hit four homers in a series in August 2007, including two in the series finale. The sweep helped trigger the Phillies late season rally to clinch their first division title since 1993.

Leading the World Series parade (Oct. 31, 2008) - When the Phillies parade turned right off Market Street and onto Broad Street, Burrell was leading the way. Burrell sat with his dog, Elvis, on a Budweiser carriage pulled by Clydesdales. It was the final image of Burrell’s Phillies career. He signed with Tampa Bay in the offseason.
