Phillies add outfielder Jordan Danks

The Phillies claimed outfielder Jordan Danks off waivers on Friday.

The Phillies on Friday claimed outfielder Jordan Danks off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.

Danks, 28, will compete for a roster spot in spring training. Danks' athleticism and defense attracted the Phillies, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said in a statement released by the club.

Although primarily a centerfielder, Danks played each of the three outfield positions over 180 games spanning three seasons with the White Sox. He hit .222 in 117 major-league at-bats last year. In 93 games last season with triple A Charlotte, he hit .270 with 18 doubles, 16 home runs and 57 RBIs.

The White Sox designated him for assignment on Jan. 8 to make room on the roster for the signing of Emilio Bonifacio. Danks' older brother, John, pitches for the White Sox.

The Phillies now have a full 40-man roster. Pitchers and catchers hold their first workout in Clearwater on Feb. 19.

"Much like our starting pitching," Amaro said, "we are creating depth in the outfield, especially with regards to defense."
