There is promising news for Adam Morgan, a lefthanded Phillies pitching prospect who missed the entire 2014 season with a shoulder injury: Morgan will log some innings in Arizona Fall League games.
Morgan was added to the Scottsdale Scorpions roster Wednesday, the league announced. He underwent shoulder surgery last January and spent the season on rehab in Florida.
That process graduated to game action in instructional league a few weeks ago. But the prospect-laden Arizona Fall League will offer Morgan a better test of his current state.
Morgan, 24, impressed Phillies officials during spring training in 2013. He was demoted to minor-league camp, but regarded as a legitimate option for later that season. Then he made just 16 starts for triple-A Lehigh Valley with a 4.04 ERA and spent two months on the disabled list with shoulder problems.
Given the lack of internal options for a patchwork 2015 rotation, Morgan's recovery deserves attention.
Joe Jordan, the Phillies' director of player development, said in late August he expected Morgan to just pitch in instructional league. The team, however, decided more innings were appropriate.
"We're going to try and get him in some competitive situations," Jordan said in August.
Morgan will join Phillies farmhands Roman Quinn, Colton Murray, Logan Moore, Ryan O'Sullivan, Nefi Ogando and Ethan Stewart in Scottsdale. Games start next week.
