Phillies release Delmon Young
The Phillies released Delmon Young on Wednesday after designating him for assignment last week. Young cleared waivers and refused an assignment to triple-A Lehigh Valley.
ATLANTA — Less than a year ago, Delmon Young was crowned MVP of the American League Championship Series. Now, the former No. 1 overall pick is a hired gun at age 27. A contending team is likely to take a chance on his bat.
The Phillies released Young on Wednesday after designating him for assignment last week. Young cleared waivers and refused an assignment to triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Young was not productive. He hit .261 with a .699 OPS in 80 games. The Phillies will cover his salary, minus the prorated league minimum, if another team signs him. In total, the Phillies will pay Young approximately $1.75 million.
He best fits on an American League team. That way, Young could be used as a part-time designated hitter and bench bat. His brief time in Philadelphia will be remembered as a footnote to a forgettable season.
