Howard's absence gives Ruf chance to play

Before Wednesday's game, Phillies interim general manager Scott Proefrock said Ryan Howard's absence would create an opportunity for Darin Ruf. The 29-year-old would play everyday at first base as Howard recovers from a swollen left knee. Proefrock said he hopes Ruf seizes the opportunity.

"It's a short window in September and it's hard to evaluate in this month," Proefrock said. "But the more at-bats he gets, the more comfortable he can get, hopefully the more productive he can be and he can help answer some questions for us for next year."

Ruf hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning of a 12-2 loss. He is hitting .269 with nine RBIs in his last 10 games.

"I've been here for parts of four years now," Ruf said. "If I can change their mind in a week of playing everyday, then I guess maybe I'll have to have one hell of a week. I guess I have to see how things end up."

Ruf was asked if he is frustrated to still have his potential be judged after being with the Phillies for four seasons.

"A little bit," Ruf said. "But, you can't look at the past. Especially, when you're in the big leagues and a guy in my position. Being a 20th round draft pick, a senior sign. I show up to the field with a great mentality everyday. Thankful to be here, thankful to be in any kind of role on the team."
