Recap of day two of Phillies draft choices

The Phillies draft shortstop Luke Williams and first baseman Kyle Martin on day-two.

The Phillies drafted a high school player and college player on Monday night as first-year scouting director Johnny Almaraz started his first draft. Here's a recap of the Phillies picks from day two:

Pick No. 83: Luke Williams, shortstop, Dana Hills High School (Calif.)

Williams is a speedy shortstop who holds his high school's career steals record. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder stole 26 bases last season. He batted .315 in 32 games and drove in 19 runs while batting leadoff. Williams is signed to play baseball at Cal Poly. He also played two years of high-school football as a wide receiver and defensive back.

Pick No. 114: Kyle Martin, first base, University of South Carolina

The power hitter slammed 14 homers this season and drove in 56 runs. He batted .350 in 203 at-bats. Martin led the Gamecocks in homers, RBIs, and batting average. He was a first-team All-SEC selection and a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. The 6-foot-1, 240-pounder was drafted in last June's 20th round by the Angels.

Pick No. 144: Bailey Falter, lefthanded pitcher, Chino Hills High School (Calif.)

The 6-foot-4 pitcher went 6-2 with a 1.20 ERA this season. Falter struck out 97 batters and walked just 11 in 75.2 innings. He throws a high-80s fastball. He committed to UC-Santa Barbara after his junior season, in which he went 8-2 with 85 strikeouts and 19 walks in 67.2 innings.

Pick No. 174: Tyler Gilbert, lefthanded pitcher, University of Southern California

Gilbert struck out 66 batters and walked 25 this season in 67.2 innings. He finished with a 5-2 record with a 2.79 ERA in six starts. The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder pitched mostly out of the bullpen. He throws a low-90s fastball. Gilbert transferred to USC from Santa Barbara Community College, where he struck out 73 batters in 85.1 innings in 2013. He developed a splitter during his time at Santa Barbara.

Pick No. 204: Luke Leftwich, righthanded pitcher, Wofford College

Leftwich is the first righthander drafted by the Phillies. He went 7-2 this season with a 4.25 ERA in 89 innings. The senior struck out a school-record 114 batters and walked 28. Leftwich started 14 games and came out of the bullpen twice. His strikeout numbers rose from his junior season, in which he fanned 78 strikeouts in 76.1 innings His grandfather, Tom Timmermann, pitched with the Detroit Tigers (1969-1973) and the Cleveland Indians (1973-1974).

Pick No. 234: Greg Pickett, outfielder, Legend High (Auroa, Colo.)

The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder had a good workout recently for the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The lefthanded batter hits for power. Pickett batted .420 in 50 at-bats this season and hit six homers and drove in 22 runs. He's committed to play baseball at Mississippi State.

Pick No. 264: Mark Laird, outfielder, LSU

The lefthanded hitter is batting .323 this season in 248 at-bats. The speedster has 23 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. Laird, a junior, has a good glove and mostly plays right field. The 6-foot-2, 173-pounder bats near the top of LSU's lineup.  The Tigers are headed to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. LSU plays TCU on Sunday at 2 p.m. Laird played football in high school and was the MVP of the 2011 and 2011 Louisiana state title game as a wide receiver and defensive back.

Pick No. 294: Josh Tobias, third baseman, University of Florida

The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder wrapped up day two for the Phillies. The senior is batting .373 this season for the Gators, who will play in the College World Series on Saturday against Miami. He is 11 for 13 this season on stolen base attempts and has walked 21 times in 212 at-bats. He has 24 extra-base hits and 41 RBIs. The Washington Nationals drafted him the 31st round of 2011's draft.
