Sixers' Markelle Fultz to wear No. 7 — at least for now
Teammate Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot has the No. 20 that Fultz is accustomed to wearing.
SALT LAKE CITY — Markelle Fultz wore jersey No. 20 at DeMatha Catholic High School and at Washington. The 76ers' first overall pick wants to continue to wear that number in the NBA.
However, the point guard will don No. 7 on Monday night in the Utah Jazz Summer League opener and for the time being. That's because his coveted No. 20 belongs to second-year guard Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot.
Fultz will most likely have to work out a deal with Luwawu-Cabarrot to get the jersey. Often, players have to pay for the coveted jersey number.
"Right now, I'm still working on figuring out what number I wear for the season," Fultz said during Monday's shootaround for that night's game against the Boston Celtics.
"I honestly wore this number [7] for USA basketball," he added. "So at the end of the day, the number doesn't matter to me. It matters what you do in the number.
"You can make history in any number."
However, Fultz added again, he's still going through the process of figuring out his number for the season.
