Philly Marathon: Picking up the gauntlet

Before this past Saturday's Rothman Institute 8k ((part of the Philadelphia Marathon weekend) Inquirer Sports Editor John Quinn laid down a challenge. He told half-marathoner Sam Ndereba that he could run the 8K quicker than Ndereba could run the half marathon. Here's his post-race follow-up.

Sam, I am sorry.

I ran far faster than I anticipated, 57:41 for the Rothman Institute 8k, so my bet wasn't fair, my 8k time against your half marathon time the next day, which was 1:03.42.

So you keep your race number and I keep my Broad Street Run 2012 teal t-shirt.

Your problem isn't me, it's that long-legged 22-year-old blur from your home country of Kenya, Isaac Korir Kedikou. He won the 8k and the half marathon and took money out of your pocket. Tell him to stay home next year or run in New York instead. And don't tell him about the Cooper Norcross Run the Bridge race either.

You're too nice a guy, Good Neighbor Sam from Norristown.
