WBB: Explorers Lead Rider Wire-to-Wire in 78-58 Win

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle women's basketball team ran out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back as the Explorers led the visiting Rider Broncs wire-to-wire in a 78-58 non-conference win. Senior Ashley Gale led all scorers with 25 points, while Nadia Duncan and Ebonee Jones contributed 15 and 12, respectively.

With the win, the Explorers (4-5) move to 9-0 all-time over the Broncs (0-9) and close out the 2010 portion of the home schedule with a winning record in games played at Tom Gola Arena (3-2).

Gale (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) scored 25 points on 5-for-12 shooting from 3-point range, and came just two shy of her career high of 27 set on Dec. 8, 2007, against Quinnipiac. She added a game-high five steals, a block and an assist.

Duncan (Mt. Vernon, NY/Mt. Vernon) added eight rebounds to her 15 points. Chelsea Conner (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) chipped in nine points with a team-high nine rebounds. Michea Bryant (Cheltenham, MD/Bishop McNamara) added nine points and a game-high six assists.

The Broncs placed just one scorer in double figures as Shereen Lightbourne netted a team-high 11 points. Sarah Homan pulled down a game-high 11 boards.

The visitors hung around in the first half, holding the Explorers to a single-digit lead throughout most of the half. The Explorers were up 37-30 at the break, but Bryant sank a fastbreak layup with 16:51 remaining in the game to put the Explorers' lead back to double digits for good.

The Explorers would push the lead to as many as 27 on two separate occasions late in the game and never let the Broncs back in it en route to the 78-58 final.

The Explorers shot 44.4 percent from the field including 46.7 percent (7-for-15) from 3-point range, and went 23-for-29 from the free throw line. They limited the Broncs to 34.8 percent and the visitors shot just 5-for-14 from the charity stripe.

The team now heads on the road for nearly a month, starting at Seton Hall on Wednesday (12/22) at 2:00 PM. The Explorers return home on January 15th in the Atlantic 10 home opener against Saint Louis.
