Like gender (for some) life is fluid, always changing.
The Mummers Parade is always changing. Here are the top five ways:
1- The Parade now marches down, not up, Broad Street.
2- Air horns. Once a raucous nuisance they have all but disappeared.
3- "Great taste, less filling." The Miller Lite call and counter chant across Broad and Market have disappeared.
4- Women barred from the Parade. Women have been shot through all the divisions starting in the '70s, if not earlier.
5- Mummers' kisses. Young(er) women used to compete to see how many different colors of greasepaint they could get on their cheeks by kissing Mummers in makeup.
