Amber Rose, Rihanna make BET Awards best dressed
At Sunday night's BET Awards, “Bad Boy,” Janet Jackson and Smokey Robinson tributes electrified the stage. Less electric, though, were the stars on the red carpet.
Between Meek Mill, Bryshere "Yazz" Gray, Patti Labelle and the recent Temple grad fan presenter Rebecca who was brought onstage, Philadelphia had a heavy presence at Sunday night's L.A.-based 15th Annual BET Awards. The show went off largely without a hitch and with odes to political issues and entertainment greats. Show opener Kendrick Lamar performed his song "Alright" while standing atop a defaced police squad car and new Wondaland artist Jidenna harkening back to civil rights era "I Am A Man" symbolism with "I Am A Classic Man" signage. "Bad Boy," Janet Jackson and Smokey Robinson tributes electrified the stage. Less electric, though, were the stars on the the red carpet.
One of the few celebrities who managed to make a statement on the red carpet was Philly's own Amber Rose. The starlet took to the red carpet with model friend Blac Chyna in matching white tuxedos and bustiers. Rose said the matching outfits were in celebration of the recent SCOTUS gay marriage decision.
Host Tracee Ellis Ross stunned in a fitted white midi dress with white pumps. She also had some notable outfit changes throughout the show, like a very Kim Kardashian-esque skin-tight, wet-look nude dress and a sparkling white body suit.
Once known for her black and white tuxedos, singer Janelle Monae has found a new staple: the cape dress. She rocked one a black one with gold embellishments last night, accessorizing with gold rings on every finger and a gold chocker necklace.
Monae wasn't the only one in her camp making a mark on the BET Awards red carpet. Wondaland recording artist and "Classic Man" singer Jidenna stayed true to his dapper, vintage sense of style in a cream, pinstripe three-piece suit with a wooden cane accessory.
Before she presented an award wearing the same white dress as her co-presenter Laverne Cox, Gabrielle Union shone on the red carpet in a sequin covered black halter dress with side cutouts.
Model Karruche Tran, best known for being "Chris Brown's ex," stunned last night in an iridescent white snakeskin patterned Stello suit with just a La Perla bra for a top. Her abs looked amazing. She also debuted some silver locks.
Though Meek Mill's look fell a little short, one rapper from Philly put his best foot forward on the red carpet. "Empire" star Bryshere Y. Gray was adorable in a lime green blazer and black sneakers. He also performed as part of the "Empire" cast during the awards.
Nicki Minaj's BET Awards arrival outfit may have read a little too Ursula the Sea Witch but the outfit in which she performed with beau Meek was a chic, black and white, geometric cut out knee length dress.
Queen Rihanna graced the show with her presence, even if it was just to tape a few celebrities' mouths shut and debut just one minute of her upcoming music video for "BBHMM." However, she stunned as usual in a gold shorts tuxedo with bell sleeves.
Singer Sevyn Streeter bought some color to the best dressed red carpet arrivals in a strapless pink cut-out dress.
