Summer's hottest makeup trend broken down in 4 simple steps

Strobing, using highlighter to enhance high plains of the face without the addition of contour, is an old technique used by makeup artists that is now becoming mainstream.

What's old is new again. Strobing, using highlighter to enhance high plains of the face without the addition of contour, is an old technique used by makeup artists that is now becoming mainstream. It's a fresh alternative to the heavy contouring trend that was, up until now, dominating the beauty industry.

Why the sudden interest in strobing? Strobing offers a dewy, glowing, and more natural looking complexion while still defining your bone structure. The result is more J. Lo and less Kim Kardashian.

In order to really get a handle on how to properly "strobe," I consulted Jayme Arrasmith, assistant boutique manager at Make Up For Ever in the King of Prussia Mall.

"Strobing has been seen in magazines and runways for years," says Arrasmith. "The trend recently picked up on the tails of the past few years obsession with contouring."

To recreate the glow at home, Arrasmith breaks it down in 4 easy steps:

1. Start with your favorite foundation. My current favorite is Ultra HD by Make Up For Ever. Apply evenly over the skin with your favorite brush or sponge.

2. I like to use a creamy concealer in one to two shades lighter than the skin tone to the high plains of the face. These are areas I want to stand out or draw attention to. By highlighting first, you allow the natural shadows of the face to take shape. The shadowing effect is more subtle than applying a contour product and allows for a more natural look.

3. Next, I like to softly buff a shimmering highlighter over the areas I want to be even brighter. Make Up For Ever Pro Sculpting Duo is my go to product for this. The glowy highlighter in each duo can be buffed into the skin to create high shine without looking powdery.

4. To keep from looking oily rather than dewy and glowing, be sure to use matte blushes and set areas of concern with powder. The difference in texture will create beautiful dimension on the skin and keep you from feeling too shiny.
