Union beat New York Red Bulls in preseason tournament finale
The Union are coming home to start the 2015 season with a trophy in hand.
Andrew Wenger scored a brace that bookended Fernando Aristeguieta's fourth of the preseason, as Philadephia beat the New York Red Bulls, 3-1, in the final of the IMG Suncoast Pro Classic in Bradenton, Fla.
For much of the game, especially in the first half, the Union were outplayed. But in the category that mattered most, the Union jumped out early and never trailed.
Just three minutes after kickoff, Wenger was in the right place at the right time to redirect a Ray Gaddis cross into the Red Bulls' net.
In the 32nd minute, Aristeguieta headed a Sébastien Le Toux free kick toward New York goalkeeper Luis Robles' near post, and Robles parried the ball over his own line.
In the 44th minute, Wenger hit a low, slow shot from just inside the 18-yard box that somehow rolled past a gaggle of New York defenders and beat Robles at the far post.
It took until the 80th minute for New York to beat Rais Mbolhi, who had a strong performance throughout the evening. Sal Zizzo took advantage of a Gaddis miscue and raced up the right flank, then set up Bradley Wright-Phillips for the finish.
