1 - Designated Player
2 - Homegrown Player, does not count against salary cap
3 - Generation Adidas member, does not count against the salary cap

The only differences between that list and the one from last August are the addition of Danny Cruz, and the subtractions of Lionard Pajoy and Jorge Perlaza. Those moves reduced the Union's payroll by $180,000 of base salary and $203,500 of guaranteed compensation.1

Here's how the Union's payroll stacks up against the other 18 teams in MLS. For your amusement, I've noted next to the payroll figures where each team currently ranks in the standings:

1. New York Red Bulls: $15,814,369.46 / $16,728,107.80 (t-2nd East, 53 points)

Here are the top 25 salaries in MLS right now. The most notable addition to the ranking is New York Red Bulls designated player midfielder Tim Cahill, who's making over $3.6 million per season. That gives the Red Bulls three of the top four salaries in MLS. New York and Los Angeles have six of the top seven.

1. Thierry Henry, New York Red Bulls: $5,000,000.00 / 5,600,000.00
2. Rafael Márquez, New York Red Bulls: $4,600,000.00 / $4,600,000.00

13. Eric Hassli, Toronto FC: $550,000.00 / $790,000.00
14. Fredy Montero, Seattle Sounders: $600,000.00 / $756,000.00
15. David Ferreira, FC Dallas: $600,000.00 / $705,000.00

16. Dwayne De Rosario, D.C. United: $617,857.20 / $663,190.53
17. Christian Tiffert, Seattle Sounders: $600,000.00 / $625,000.00
18. Juan Pablo Ángel, Chivas USA: $350,000.00 / $600,000.00
19. Barry Robson, Vancouver Whitecaps: $439,999.92 / $596,499.92
20. Shalrie Joseph, Chivas USA: $495,000.00 / $554,333.33

22. Hamdi Salihi, D.C. United: $305,460.00 / $487,460.00
23. Sherjill MacDonald, Chicago Fire: $360,000.00 / $487,125.00
24. Javier Morales, Real Salt Lake: $425,000.00 / $477,500.00
25. Benny Feilhaber, New England Revolution: $400,000.00 / $446,000.00

The highest paid player who is not a Designated Player is D.C. United's Dwayne De Rosario. As I noted back in August, De Rosario is one of four players in MLS whose salaries are above the DP threshold, but are paid down with allocation money. The other three are Chivas USA's Juan Pablo Angel, New England's Benny Feilhaber and Colorado's Conor Casey.

Casey's guaranteed compensation figure is $400,000, the 28th-highest salary in MLS.

There are 16 Designated Players with a salary lower than De Rosario's, and eight with a salary lower than Casey's. They earned DP status either because of their salaries or because of the amount that was spent on their transfer fees.

(For the real wonks among you, one of those players isn't in the league right now. Chicago Fire forward Federico Puppo is currently on loan to Defensor Sporting in his native Uruguay.)

Leaguewide, MLS is paying out $86,492,798.07 in base salary and $99,257,881.30 in guaranteed compensation to a total of 554 players.

There are currently three pool goalkeepers on the league's books. Scott Angevine earns $33,756.00; Chris Sharpe earns 44,100.00; and Steve Spangler earns 33,750.00.

In addition, there are two players who are on the league's books despite not being signed with any team at this point. That is because they were on guaranteed contracts, so they get all the money they are owed.

Former Sporting Kansas City utility man Luke Sassano thus gets all of his $83,025.00, and former New England Revolution midfielder Jeremiah White - a product of FC Delco - gets all of his $44,004.00.

Here are some other noteworthy stats.

Mean (average) salary: $156,124.18 / $179,165.85
Median (middle) salary: $74,260.00 / $84,770.84
Mode (most common) salary: $44,000.00 / $33,750.00

Highest salary: $5,000,000.00 / $5,600,000.00 (Thierry Henry, New York Red Bulls)
Lowest salary: $33,750.00 / $33,750.00 (39 players)

The only Union player making the league minimum is defender Raymon Gaddis.
