Philadelphia Union 2016 player salaries as of September 15

The Major League Soccer Players Union has released this year's latest batch of salary data. Although the release became official on September 30, the data was confirmed on September 15. Let's dig into the numbers.

You can take a look back at past salary data sets here.

You will see four numbers listed next to each name: base salary, guaranteed compensation, and (where applicable) the change in each figure from the previous release last September.

The Union's payroll totals $5,806,961.54 in base salary and $6,402,693.84 in guaranteed compensation.

Before getting into this, a reminder that the numbers can include players loaned out by the clubs in question even if those players aren't officially on those clubs' rosters at the moment.

Chicago is an unusual case. The Fire moved two enormous salaries during the summer by releasing Gilberto ($1,145,000.00 guaranteed) and trading Kennedy Igboananike ($901,666.67 guaranteed) to D.C. The latter move accounts for much of D.C.'s rise in the payroll rankings.

That said, the move of Igboananike's salary is in name only, because Chicago is paying much of it through the end of this year. It's only on D.C.'s books in the players' union file. If you put the money back in Chicago's figures here, they obviously move up. But I don't know exactly how much each team is on the hook for, so I don't know exactly where the Fire would land.

The highest-paid player who is not a Designated Player is New York City FC's Mix Diskerud ($761,250.00 / $761,250.00). His salary cap hit is paid down with MLS' famed "Targeted Allocation Money."

There are multiple age-based salary tiers for Designated Players. When counting the number of non-DPs who make more than a DP salary, I use the senior-level threshhold of $457,500, because it's just easier to explain things that way.

A total of 64 players earn more than the senior-level Designated Player threshhold in base salary. Within that group, 23 are not DPs, thanks to TAM and other ways MLS teams can fudge the books.

Officially, just one player makes the minimum salary: Montréal Impact forward Michael Salazar. In reality, the minimum salary by league rule is $51,500 (as the base and guaranteed figure). Give or take a few cents for taxes and exchange rates, 37 players are at that pay grade. Nineteen of the 20 teams in MLS have at least one such player on their roster; D.C. is the only team that doesn't. Dallas, New England and Philadelphia have the most such players with three each.

Atlanta United, an expansion team coming next year, has already started signing players. So far, they have six names on the books, with a total outlay of $364,536.00 / $523,619.33. The most expensive player is Argentine forward Hector Villalba ($62,508.00 / $170,258.00). The cheapest is Ghanaian midfielder Otoo. The best-known is Trinidad & Tobago national team striker Kenwyne Jones ($62,508.00 / $85,841.33).

Gargan, a Philadelphia native, was most recently with the Los Angeles Galaxy. He was waived by the team in February but still has ties to the organization, including a role on the team's television broadcasts.

Manning was a late-round draft pick by the Portland Timbers in 2015. He has since been with the club's USL team.

Ebobisse is an odd case. The U.S. under-20 national team forward withdrew from Duke University in August to sign a contract with MLS, but he won't join a team until he's allocated in the 2017 SuperDraft. He has been training with D.C. United and its USL partner, the Richmond Kickers, since then.
