In the galleries: Art picks for August

Your monthly guide to the Philly art world.

Two new exhibitions have just opened at Paradigm Gallery and Studio (746 S. 4th St.): drawings and sculptures from Philly-based artist Luke O'Sullivan and a collaboration of colorful illustrations and three-dimensional works from Hannah Stouffer and Hilary White. In "Cool Shelter," on view until Saturday, Aug. 22, O'Sullivan creates diorama-like environments utilizing both above- and below-ground structures. Stouffer's and White's work take on colorful and geometric forms in "Ingress/Egress," on view until Saturday, Sept. 12. The gallery is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.

Dark and romantic representations of nature and garden fauna, intricately designed with paper, plexiglass, charcoal and seashells, comprise Lauren Fensterstock's first solo Philadelphia exhibition "Forays and Follies" at the URBN Center Annex's Leonard Pearlstein Gallery (3401 Filbert St.) at Drexel University. The exhibit is on display until Friday, Aug. 28 and can be viewed Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Soon-to-be grads of Moore College of Art and Design's (20th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway) multiple graduate studies programs (M.A. in Art Education with an Emphasis in Special Populations, M.F.A. in Interior Design and M.F.A. in Studio Art, to be exact) will show work in the school's galleries until Saturday, Aug. 28. Attend the exhibit's opening reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14. The galleries are open Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Work from the permanent collection of the recently closed Rosenfeld Gallery is now on display until Monday, Aug. 31 at the Old City Jewish Arts Center (119 N. 3rd St.) featuring paintings of fields and landscapes. Check it out Sunday through Thursday between noon and 5 p.m.

Though the end results may vary, the two artists' work in "Big Intimacies" both achieve private references. Visiting curator Diana Nawi selected work from artists Roberta Massuch and Seneca Weintraut for the exhibition at The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (237 S. 18th St.) consisting of paintings and ceramics. Opening on Thursday, Aug. 13, the exhibit is open until Friday, Sept. 18 and is available to view Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lots of layers of paint and texture mark the six new paintings featured in Kathleen Shaver's latest exhibit, "The Structure of Chaos" at Crane Arts (1400 N. American St.), opening Thursday, Aug. 13. You have until Friday, Oct. 2 to check it out. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and until 9 p.m. the second Thursday of the month.

Illustrator Howard Pyle painted nine murals for his Wilmington, Del. home. All nine have been preserved and will be on display at the Delaware Art Museum (2301 Kentmere Parkway, Wilmington, Del.) starting Friday, Aug. 14. This is the first time since the 1930s that the full set of murals has been exhibited. The museum is open Wednesday and Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
