It feels like we were just figuring out where to go for February's First Friday. This month, though, we're that much closer to spring. Check out some highlights of Friday, March 6th's events.

The Chemical Heritage Foundation (315 Chestnut St.) knows a thing or two about books — in addition to their signature alchemy. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., hear talks from CHF fellow Stefano Gattei about the intricacies of astronomy books while getting crafty with calligraphy, marbling and hand-stitching your own books.

Showcasing the work and stories of Lao Americans in Philadelphia, Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine St.) presents "Laos in the House: Voices from Four Decades of the Lao Diaspora." Come for an opening reception running from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Hopscotch serves a double meaning at Little Baby's Ice Cream (2311 Frankford Ave.). Both a new limited-run ice cream flavor (a hop-tinged ice cream with butterscotch) as well as an equally as limited-run zine by local artist Keith Greiman, "Hopscotch" will be up for grabs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Savery Gallery's (319 N. 11th St.) latest exhibit opens with an artist reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. A collaboration between Jessica Hans and Miranda Pfeiffer, "Cones Look Like Cowled Monks," is a collection of graphite drawings, textiles, hand-drawn animation and ceramics inspired by natural forms in Turkey.

James Dupree's latest exhibition, comprised of paintings, collages and prints, "Works from the Stolen Dreams and Forbidden Fruit," delves into the subconscious and thrives on ambiguity. See it when it opens at the Art Sanctuary (628 S. 16th St.) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Flower Show isn't the only thing inspired by the movies. This month at the Barnes Foundation (2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway), go Old Hollywood from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with live music and talks on filmmaker Jean Renoir and the starring role florals played in impressionist works.

Sip your way into the weekend with Harvest Ridge Winery, who are bringing eight wines for sampling at Pinot Boutique (227 Market St.) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Representatives from the winery will be on hand to answer questions and to share a new release.

Community artists have donated drawings, designs, prints, collages and more, confined to an 8.5" x 11" vertical page to AIGA Philadelphia for their PageMaker show and sale. Check out the submissions (and buy your favorite(s) for a mere $10) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at AIGA Philadelphia SPACE (72 N. 2nd St.).

Classical musicians and Curtis Institute graduates perform three new pieces at 8 p.m. at FringeArts (140 N. Columbus Blvd.) based on books, films and epic classics. If you're more into the late-night scene, things pick up again at 11 p.m. with Red 40 and the Last Groovement.

Two Philly photogs, Mike Ryan and Breanne Furlong, will show off their shots upstairs at North Bowl (909 N. 2nd St.). Starting at 9 p.m., the event includes free snacks, drink specials and good tuneage.
