Philadelphia Film Society announces summer lineup
With summer comes sunny skies, beach trips and outdoor plans. However, when temps get too high or when thunderstorms put a damper on your plans, the movies is the place to be.

Through various programming blocks perfect for budding filmmakers, families and teen genre fanatics, the Philadelphia Film Society will offer an air-conditioned respite for all at the Roxy Theater (2035 Sansom St.).
A selection of contemporary LGBT films — including one shot entirely on an iPhone — start June's screenings. All begin at 7:30 p.m. like Cut Snake on Tuesday, June 2, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (Thursday, June 4) and Tangerine (Thursday, June 25).
Who said movies couldn't be scientific? The Film Lab series provides audiences with quirky and peculiar films and a talk with relevant experts. First up is Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9 followed by a discussion with University of Pennsylvania Assistant Professor of Medical Ethics & Health Policy Lance Wahlert. Come back for Donnie Darko and a chat with author Jeffrey Blomquist at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7.
Ah, teen comedies. There's no denying as a generation we love the Superbads and Cluelesses of cinema. BYO wine and settle into the easy watching of Superbad (Wednesday, June 10), Mean Girls (Wednesday, June 17), Bring It On (Wednesday, July 1), Clueless (Wednesday, July 15) and The Craft (Wednesday, July 29). All movies begin at 7:30 p.m.
The always fun and always weird midnight movie genre comes to the Roxy for the Graveyard Shift. Starting at midnight on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the summer, the flicks hit on topics like a pregnant mother fending for herself from an intruder and a giant spider attack. The summer lineup starts with The Treatment on Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13 and continues with Blow Out (Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27), Arachnophobia (Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12) and Inside (Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25).
A different kind of ladies night, Tuesday, June 16 and Tuesday, July 14's screenings focus on female documentary makers. The Wolfpack, about six brothers who's father kept them shut in, and (Dis)honesty: The Truth About Lies, featuring insights on why humans lie, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in June and July, respectively. Both of the films' directors will be available for a Q&A after the movie.
The Henry Fool trilogy, with films released between 1997 and 2014, is shown in full on Saturday, June 20 starting at 2 p.m.
Three comedies hitting on the trials of the human condition from Swedish director Roy Andersson will screen on Sunday, June 21 starting at 2 p.m.
This summer's Filmadelphia showcases — where local filmmakers show work in return for audience feedback — take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23 (where all of the short films' directors will be in attendance for a Q&A) and Tuesday, July 21 (a screening of The Magic Bracelet and a behind-the-scenes documentary).
The constantly romanticized France in the early '60s comes to life on screen during a block of French Cinema programming in July. Movies on the lineup include The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Monday, July 6, Wednesday, July 8 and Thursday, July 9, 2 p.m.), Breathless (Monday, July 13, Wednesday, July 15, Thursday, July 16, 2 p.m. and Saturday, July 18, noon), Hiroshima Mon Amour (Monday, July 20, Wednesday, July 22, Thursday, July 23, 2 p.m.) and Jules and Jim (Monday, July 27, Wednesday, July 29 and Thursday, July 30, 2 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 1, noon).
See the latest James Ponsoldt-directed feature, The End of the Tour (starring Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel) before its theatrical release at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, the final film in a series of four by the director shown at the Roxy. It kicks off on Monday, July 6 with Off The Black and continues the following two Mondays, July 13 (Smashed) and July 20 (The Spectacular Now). All films begin at 7:30 p.m.
A one-off event featuring cartoonist Bill Plympton will see the screening of his 2013 animated feature Cheatin' and a Q&A on Thursday, July 30 at 7:30 p.m.
