Philly gets philanthropic this month

It’s nice to know that there are some seriously charitable folks in the area. They don’t call Philly the City of Brotherly Love for nothing! Over the next few weeks there are a ton of functions around town that are raising money for great causes.

Lovers of history should attend the Spring at the Mansion fundraiser at the Philadelphia Art Alliance. The home of the Philadelphia Art Alliance, the Wetherill Mansion needs a little help in the preservation and restoration areas, so a portion of the proceeds at this event, which gets underway at 6 p.m., will go towards that. Guests will be treated to food from Rittenhouse Tavern, live music and a silent auction on Friday, May 2.

Non-profit group CureDuchenne is hosting a night of "blingo" at the Hyatt Regency at Penn's Landing this Saturday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. All the money raised at this evening of bling and bingo will go into research to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Some big names will be in attendance including former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell, American Idol alum Sarah Burgess and producer of the "Preston and Steve Show" on WMMR, Marissa Magnatta.

The annual Night of Broadway Stars, featuring performances by Broadway legends like Capthia Jenkins (Dream Girls), Danny Zolli (Jesus Christ Superstar), Craig Schulman (Les Miserables) and a pre-show performance by Jon Bon Jovi takes place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Wednesday, May 7. This event supports Covenant House Pennsylvania, a group that provides services to homeless and runaway youth in Philadelphia. Get there right after work: cocktail hour starts at 5:30 p.m.

Fashion and charity unite at the Daisy Day Luncheon. On Thursday, May 8, head to the Hyatt at the Bellevue at 10:30 a.m. for this auction, luncheon and fashion show benefiting the Center for Fetal Diagnosis at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The fashion show features looks by Zac Posen. You don't want to miss out because he's giving attendees a sneak preview of his fall 2014 line.

If you love guacamole as much as I do, make it a point to get to Philly Give & Get's Philanthroparty, where along with the endless guacamole, they'll have gaming-themed raffle prizes, happy hour-priced drinks and music at Lucha Cartel. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the start of the event following an hour later. All proceeds go to the Philadelphia Center for Arts and Technology at this Thursday, May 8 fundraiser.

Bollywood comes to Philly on Wednesday, May 14 when the Rollins Family Foundation holds Taste of the World: Bollywood Bash. Local chefs will serve food, starting at 7 p.m. at the Union League of Philadelphia while guests—like Jimmy Rollins himself and his MLB buddies—don their best Bollywood attire. The Rollins Family Foundation partners with local groups who provide food to Philadelphia families in need.

Later in the month, on Thursday, May 29, Philadelphia Mural Arts holds their 10th Annual Wall Ball that raises money to help fund public art projects. The cocktail and dinner party starts at 7 p.m. at Union Transfer make sure to rub shoulders with M. Night Shyamalan, who's being honored.
