Gandolfini's role ultimately went to Oscar nominee and Dark Knight star Eric Roberts, who plays creepy local politician, Governor Hughes — a move that caused almost as much shock as putting Gandolfini in the part.
"James Gandolfini, we approached him as well for the role of governor," director Tom Six told Entertainment Weekly this week. "I had James Gandolfini in mind and Eric Roberts. I was talking to them both, but when James Gandolfini read the script, he was a little bit hesitant. Yeah, he backed off, and then he died, of course."
An indelicate statement, maybe, but true. Roberts, for his part, apparently "loved the Human Centipede films" and "wanted to do it immediately."
As a result, we lost out on a potentially Sopranos-inspired Governor Hughes, and by extension, an undoubtedly more red gravy-focused Human Centipede. Whether that's a shame, though, is up for debate.
Human Centipede III is available via VOD now.
