Lilly Pulitzer under fire as headquarters’ fat-shaming cartoons hit the Web

King of Prussia-based fashion brand Lilly Pulitzer is under fire today after photos showing fat-shaming cartoons displayed next to fabric swatches at the company's Pennsylvania headquarters hit the Web.
New York Magazine's The Cut published the photos as part of a Lilly Pulitzer profile on Tuesday, showing several mocking cartoons of overweight women alternately donning a bikini and regular street clothes.
"Just another day of … fat, white, and hideous," read one cartoon. Under it in small letters is written, "You should probably just kill yourself."
"Put it down, carb face," adds a second.
Initially, The Cut included the photos as part of its story with no caption added, though now one has been added to the photos of the drawings that indicates the image is of "an employee's personal illustration at her cubicle."
Business Insider has since obtained a statement from Lilly Pulitzer regarding the drawings:
"These illustrations were the work of one individual and were posted in her personal work area. While we are an employer that does encourage people to decorate their own space, we are a female-dominated company and these images do not reflect our values. We apologize for any harm this may have caused."
This, of course, is the latest in the scandal department from Lilly Pulitzer, which earlier this year drew ire from Twitter over not including plus-size clothing for its recent Target collaboration line.
In that incident, sizes went up to only 14 in stores but extended to 26W in the online shop. However, despite the controversy, the Target collaboration line reportedly sold well when it saw a release this past April.
"Lilly herself was ultra-inclusive," said senior manager Eleni Tavantzis in The Cut's profile of the company. "Everybody got to party."
