Student receives $25,000 in donations from strangers thanks to a sign on ESPN's College GameDay

One student is $25,000 richer thanks to a simple sign and the generosity of strangers. The student was in Auburn, Alabama for the taping of ESPN's College GameDay ahead of the Auburn/Alabama instant classic that played out on Saturday night. When the camera panned over the crowd, the student held up his sign, which read, "HI MOM SEND" above a QR code and a picture of the Bitcoin symbol.

When the camera panned over the crowd, the student held up his sign, which read, "HI MOM SEND" above a QR code and a picture of the Bitcoin symbol.

Within hours, people in the deep Internet had enhanced the QR code to figure out the guy's Bitcoin wallet address. Then the Bitcoins started pouring in.

Though the student, only identified up to this point as his Reddit username BitcoinPitcher2, didn't initially think the QR code would be able to be scanned, fellow redditors have proven him wrong to the tune of nearly 23 Bitcoins as of Monday afternoon. At a value of nearly $1,100 per Bitcoin, the student has raked in more than $25,000 in a little over 24 hours and counting. [BuzzFeed]
