Twitter creates custom emoji for pope's US visit
We’ve been talking about it for months. Now, as the pope takes to the skies to travel from Cuba to the U.S., Washington, D.C., New York and Philly are gearing up for his arrival.
We've been talking about it for months. Now, as the pope takes to the skies to travel from Cuba to the U.S., Washington, D.C., New York and Philly are gearing up for his arrival.
Not just on the ground, Twitter is getting in on the papal action with new custom emoji designed for his visit. Users can view the custom emoticons by using the hashtags PopeInUS, PopeInDC, PopeInNYC and PopeInPhilly in a tweet. The City of Brotherly Love's pope-themed emoji is, fittingly, an illustration of the Liberty Bell. Pope Francis is speaking at Independence Hall on Saturday.
Other emoji created for the pope's visit include his likeness in front of an American Flag for #PopeInUS, as well as images of the Capitol and the Statue of Liberty for #PopeInDC and #PopeInNYC, respectively.
This isn't the first time Pope Francis' U.S. mini-tour has been commemorated with digitized images. In mid-September, a company called Swyft Media ceated the "Popemoji" keyboard app, which features 52 pontiff-related emoji and 14 moving GIFs. That round-up included a few selections for Philly including Pope Francis eating a cheesesteak, giving a thumbs-up in front of the Liberty Bell, and posing under the LOVE Park sign, among others.
After Swyft announced they may be creating more emoji for the pope's visit, Philly.com imagined five additional Pope Francis emoji that are less cliché.
