Snow: Half a season's worth

Philadelphia’s official total inches up to 10.8; normal for an entire season is about 22.

When we were trying to get to work about 8 this morning among the stalled cars and fast and furious snowflakes, we thought it was beginning to look a lot like Sunday, when we happened to be out driving around 12:30.

In the end, though, this one turned out to be a mirror opposite in some ways.

For example, this one was well-predicted – over-predicted for Philadelphia and adjacent South Jersey.

On Sunday, temperatures dropped into the road-freezing 20s; today they had a hard time getting below freezing, and by late morning the main roads were wet.

The most-evident difference was the reversal of fortune in the accumulation pattern. So far, Hatfield, Montgomery County, and Perkasie, Bucks County, share the jackpot with 5 inches for this one.

Philadelphia International Airport/National Park weighed in with 2.2.

On Sunday, the airport total was 8.6; Perkasie, 1.8.

While we're on the subject of the official measurement, Philadelphia's seasonal total now stands at 10.8, or about half the normal amount for an entire run of winter, 22 inches.

Next up, an impressive early season cold spell, with temperatures heading for the teens for the first times since last Feb. 2.

A storm threat looms for Saturday, but it's only Tuesday, and if we learned anything in the last three days it is no snow forecast before its time.
