Snow anniversary

On this date 35 years ago, earliest snowfall ever in Philly.

In the history of Philadelphia snowfall, this date remains in a class by itself.

It was on Oct. 10, 1979, that 2.1 inches of snow was recorded officially at Philadelphia International Airport.

No other season has come close for a first snowfall.

In 2011, during a powerful storm that left significant accumulations north and west of the city, 0.3 inches was measured officially in Philadelphia on Oct. 29.

But that finished a distant second, 19 days behind.

The government will post is winter outlook next week, and we should be seeing more of those before month's end.

We do know one thing: The record for the earliest measurable snow is safe for now.
