Drexel's Marginean Sets Philly Women's Scoring Record

By Mel Greenberg

PHILADELPHIA _ Drexel senior Gabriela Marginean set the all-time city women's basketball record at the six local Division I school Thursday night in the first half in a Colonial Athletic Association game against Towson at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

The native of Romania needed seven points to pass former Penn star Diana Caramanico, who hekl the previous mark at 2,415 points.

Marginean scored two quick baskets and later drove inside to tie the mark with 11:56 left in the first half.

She missed a long three-point attempt at her next opportunity.

Drexel was making several turnovers in a game in which the Dragons were looking for revenge from a loss to the Tigers down in Maryland several weeks ago.

Coach Denise Dillon's squad needs a win at this posting moment to hold second place all alone in the CAA.

Drexel trailed 12-9 when the ball went back in play with 7:59 left in the half.

The record off Marginean's historic shot came with 7:17 left inside on a pass from Alison Lupariello, her senior classmate and one of her best friends.

The announcement was going to be made at the next time out but the DacPack was aware and already started chanting "Gabby, Gsabby" after the record was broken.
