HARRISBURG - A Mellon Financial Corp. executive was nominated yesterday to become the state's next banking secretary.

Steven Kaplan, Mellon's chief of staff for the Mid-Atlantic region, has spent more than 20 years in the Pennsylvania banking industry, Gov. Rendell said in announcing the nomination.

"I've known Steve for 30 years, and his extensive experience in so many aspects of the financial-services industry will be a tremendous asset to the commonwealth," Rendell said.

Kaplan, 55, joined Mellon in 1982 after working in the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. He has a bachelor's degree in English and a law degree from Temple University.

He is a member of the President's Advisory Board at Temple and is a trustee at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia.

The Senate must confirm Kaplan's appointment.

He would succeed Victoria Reider, who has been acting secretary since A. William Schenck III resigned last fall.

The state's Banking Department, with 174 employees, oversees state-chartered financial institutions, protects citizens from financial abuses, offers financial education, and helps foster economic development.
