Beretta 76, Doughboys

Come early, leave late, rock out. Headliners Beretta 76 and openers Jukebox Zeros bring a blast of South Philly rawk-and-roll north of Girard to sandwich Jersey garage legends the Doughboys. Beretta always satisfies with tender-hearted yet plenty tough rock. Camille Escobedo's spirited vocals justify comparisons from Debbie Harry to Chrissie Hynde and Joan Jett, and Pete Rydberg provides generous guitar crunch. Jukebox Zeros will preview their forthcoming album of Dolls/Ramones/

Replacements-inspired guit-punk. Plainfield, N.J.'s, Doughboys (formed in 1964, with an early Stones sound) are the night's living-history lesson. Championed by Little Steven on his Underground Garage show, they're back with mostly original members, including drummer/songwriter Richard X. Heyman, and a searing debut disc, 2007's Is It Now? After 40 years - oh yeah.

A pointy-headed alien who hails from the sun, Gustafer is a tiny, animated chap with two DVD/CD collections of delightfully melodic pop already under his belt and a third due for release in the spring. Gustafer - and a menagerie of his similarly unusual buddies - will appear this morning at World Cafe Live. (Their images will be projected on a screen as the real musicians play on the stage.)
