Penn St. among schools competing for Navy war money

NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans is among seven universities competing for up to $30 million over six years from the U.S. Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center-Atlantic in Charleston, S.C.

NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans is among seven universities competing for up to $30 million over six years from the U.S. Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center-Atlantic in Charleston, S.C.

Clemson, Old Dominion, Penn State and Virginia Tech universities, and the universities of South Alabama and South Carolina also signed contracts that let them compete for the work.

Penn State's engineering school has a long history of collaboration with the Navy.

SPAWAR Atlantic will use university centers of excellence for advanced research and development projects in fields such as physics, mathematics, computer science and engineering.

Projects may include computer hardware engineering, communications, cyber security, sensors and wireless or computer networks.

A news release says the agency expects about 40 percent of the work to be done in Charleston, S.C., and 30 percent each in New Orleans and in Norfolk, Va.
