The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, besieged by a record 4,775 informal complaints about high winter electricity prices, wants to dramatically speed up the time it takes customers to switch competitive electricity suppliers.
The PUC on Tuesday requested comments about a proposed regulation that would require utilities to switch customers within three days of the request. It currently takes up to 40 days, depending upon when the next meter reading is scheduled.
The rule change was prompted by the large number of complaints the commission has received from customers whose variable-rate plans soared this winter. The PUC said many of the more than 12,000 consumers who have contacted the commission this year with concerns about electric supply prices expressed frustration with the time it takes to change suppliers.
