Checkpoint buys anti-shoplifter unit from Alpha

Checkpoint Systems Inc., a maker of antitheft tags for retailers, acquired a unit of Alpha Security Products for about $142 million to boost sales of products that help stymie shoplifters.

The acquisition of the S3 division is expected to add to 2008 per-share earnings by "several cents," Checkpoint said yesterday in a statement. Its shares fell $2.44, or 8.1 percent, to $27.81.
