The UGI Utilities Gas Division on Tuesday requested a 17.5 percent rate increase that would boost revenue by $58.6 million. The gas division, the largest of UGI's three gas utilities, serves 372,000 customers in 16 counties, including parts of Bucks and Montgomery Counties.

If the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission approves, a monthly bill for a typical residential gas-heating customer would increase $10.20, or 19.7 percent; bills for commercial customers would go up $20, or 7.4 percent; and bills for industrial customers would increase $33.53, or 3.2 percent.

UGI said it had invested more than $1 billion in system improvements since its last rate hike in 1995, increasing the company's rate base by over 120 percent.

PUC review is expected to last about nine months, which would delay implementation of a rate increase until October. UGI Utilities, based in Wyomissing, is a subsidiary of UGI Corp. of Valley Forge.
