Limerick Generating Station Unit 2 shut down Wednesday morning after an electrical-component malfunction affected the operation of the recirculating water pumps at the Montgomery County nuclear reactor, the plant's operator announced.

Exelon Generation, the reactor's owner, said technicians will determine the cause of the failure and repair and fully test the system before returning Unit 2 to service. The recirculating water pumps are one of several systems that cool the reactor.

Exelon said all systems responded as designed. Limerick Unit 1 remains at full power.
