Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water of Voorhees, announced Friday it will acquire the wastewater treatment system in McKeesport for $156 million. The system serves 22,000 customers.

The McKeesport City Council and the Municipal Authority of the City of McKeesport, which requested offers from potential buyers in June, voted recently to sell the sewer system to Pennsylvania American "to save our community from municipal bankruptcy," said Mayor Michael Cherepko. The water company already provides water service in the area.

The company expects to close the transaction in the second half of 2017, pending regulatory approvals.
