People who lost work in New Jersey because of the April 14 through 20 floods can apply for unemployment assistance through the Federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance program.

Even self-employed people may qualify for aid under certain circumstances. Also qualified would be people who were about to start work but couldn't because of the floods. There may also be benefits available for business owners.

In southern New Jersey, the eligible counties are Camden, Burlington, Gloucester and Mercer. People who live outside those counties, but whose work is in the counties are also eligible. The deadline to apply for benefits is June 11.

Affected residents can call 1-800-621-FEMA and 856-507-2340, the phone number for the closest New Jersey State Reemployment Center.
