Nine South Jersey Stop & Shops to become ShopRites

Wakefern Food Corp., the retailer cooperative that operates 200 ShopRite supermarkets in five states, said today that it has agreed to buy 10 Stop & Shop grocery stores, most of them in southern New Jersey. The value of the deal was not announced.

Wakefern, based in Elizabeth, N.J., said the stores would be closed briefly before reopening under the ShopRite banner and would be owned and run by six separate member companies that are part of the cooperative. The transaction with Quincy, Mass.-based Stop & Shop is expected to close by Aug. 15, Wakefern said.

The locations of the South Jersey stores included in the sale and the Wakefern members that will run them are:

-1445 Brace Rd., Cherry Hill; Supermarkets of Cherry Hill Inc.

-892 Union Mill Rd., Mount Laurel; Supermarkets of Cherry Hill Inc.

-127 Ark Rd., Mount Laurel; Eickhoff Supermarkets Inc.

-401 S. Pitney Rd., Absecon; Village Supermarkets Inc.

-542 Berlin-Cross Keys Rd., Sicklerville; Zallie Supermarkets Inc.

-1200 Chews Landing Rd., Laurel Springs; Zallie Supermarkets Inc.

-143 Bridgeton Pike, Mullica Hill; Ammons Supermarkets Inc.

-3401 Route 9 South, Rio Grande; Wakefern corporate.

Wakefern also said it was buying a Stop & Shop in Middletown, N.Y., that will replace an existing ShopRite.

Wakefern said PNC Bank branches and pharmacies in the stores will continue to operate normally while the supermarkets are being converted to ShopRites.

Wakefern has a total of 200 ShopRites in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
