Bank of America exec moves to Citizens

Philadelphia banking veteran Daniel K. Fitzpatrick is moving from Bank of America to Citizens Bank, where he will lead operations in eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

Fitzpatrick, 44, had been Bank of America's top commercial banking executive in Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware, as well as president of Bank of America in Pennsylvania.

Stephen D. Steinour, who used to head Citizens Bank's operations here, today said his own promotion this year to chief executive of Citizens Financial Group Inc, of Providence, R.I., made it hard for him to spend much time working in the Philadelphia market, though he still lives here.

"Dan is a star. He's well-known and well-liked," said Steinour, who had been discussing the move with Fitzpatrick off and on over the last two months. "He'll provide a consistency in the market that I can't provide anymore."

Fitzpatrick, who will start at Citizens on Dec. 3, was also appointed to the Executive Policy Committee of Citizens Financial, a $159 billion commercial bank holding company that is part of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

"You don't take a move like this lightly. It had to be the right opportunity," said Fitzpatrick, a Philadelphia native who had been in his previous job for about three years and had been at PNC Capital Markets and CoreStates Bank.

Fitzpatrick said he appreciated Citizens' "priority on being local" and was looking forward to working with Citizens' "much larger force" of commercial bankers in this market.

Bank of America, which entered the Philadelphia market through its 2004 purchase of Fleet, hopes to name Fitzpatrick's successor within the next several weeks, spokesman Ernesto Anguilla said. "We remain committed to growing our business here," he said.

Citizens Bank also said that Ralph J. Papa, who had been president of Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania for two years, was named chairman of that unit, with responsibility for commercial banking in western Pennsylvania and the loan production office in Washington.
