AstraZeneca, based in Wilmington, was one of 20 companies to receive the 2009 EcoLeadership Award from the Alliance for Workplace Excellence, which operates in the greater Washington area.

David Nicoli, spokesman for the pharmaceutical company, said AstraZeneca is committed to be an industry leader in environmental best practices.

Among the company's environmentally friendly initiatives over the last year: Energy Star certification for pharmaceutical manufacturing, gold-level LEED certification for sustainable building design, reduction of its carbon footprint with the addition of hybrid vehicles in the sales fleet.

There were no other winners from the Greater Philadelphia metropolitan area, according to the alliance, a nonprofit group that supports the pursuit of workplace excellence with training and education, among other things.
