The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline fell by a penny overnight in South Jersey, but held steady in Southeastern Pennsylvania, AAA Mid-Atlantic said today.

The South Jersey average fell to $2.91 a gallon, the auto club said. The average in Philadelphia and surrounding Pennsylvania counties stood at $3.11 - still a high for the year.

The national average also remained unchanged at $2.98, AAA said.

Oil prices fell early in the day despite a plunge in U.S. crude supplies that suggested demand may be recovering, the Associated Press reported.    - Reid Kanaley
