Individual income tax returns must be in the mail or filed online by midnight tonight unless filers seek an extension.

The Internal Revenue Service expects to process 140 million returns this year.

According to the IRS, the average refund, as of April 2, was $2,950, which is $255 greater than last year.

Some area Post Offices will stay open later than usual to accommodate last minute filers.

Between 4 p.m. and midnight, you can hand tax returns to postal employees at the following collection points at the Main Post Office in Philadelphia:

  1. Southwest corner of 30th and Chestnut Streets;

  2. Southwest corner of 29th and Market Streets;

  3. Northwest corner of 29th and Market Streets

Postal Service employees will be wearing safety vests and will be stationed with postal vehicles. Be sure to attach the correct postage beforehand.

The Philadelphia Main Post Office will be open until 9 p.m.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania mail center at 1000 W. Valley Road in Devon will extend window operations until midnight.

In South Jersey, the regional mail center at 421 Benigno Blvd. in Bellmawr will be open to midnight. Mail deposited in boxes outside the center before 11:59 p.m. also will be postmarked April 15.

Tomorrow, by the way, is the last day to mail back your 2010 Census form. Mailing the form will save the government money because the greater the response, fewer the surveyers the Census Bureau will have to send out to find non-responders.
