1-day electricity bazaar to aid power-shoppers

If you wondered what a retail power market looks like, now you can go to the mall and shop for electricity.

If you wondered what a retail power market looks like, now you can go to the mall and shop for electricity.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is sponsoring a one-day electricity bazaar at the King of Prussia Mall on Wednesday for Peco Energy Co. customers who have not switched electric suppliers.

Officials from the PUC, Office of Consumer Advocate, and Peco will be on hand from noon to 6 p.m. near the food court at the Pavilion at King of Prussia Mall to explain electric deregulation.

The PUC will install a bank of computers so consumers can review their options at www.papowerswitch.com.

Representatives of some of the competitive suppliers will also be attending to sign up customers. To make the switch easier, customers are asked to bring a recent electric bill.

Under the state's Electric Choice act, Peco remains the electricity distribution company in the region, responsible for billing and customer service. But customers are free to choose a generation company that supplies the power, and several are offering discounts of 10 percent or more off Peco's basic supply charge.    - Andy Maykuth
