Dave Scott had lived in West Palm Beach, Atlanta and Detroit for work, and in 2006 he relocated for his job one last time - to Philly.
He and his family viewed properties in Center City, Villanova, Bryn Mawr, and other surrounding areas, but something about Gladwyne stood out.
"It had that country feel and charm," Scott said.
The home the Scotts had found, located at 1432 Monk Road, seemed to have the best of both worlds; the quiet, suburban feel, but also the proximity to Center City at only 12 miles away.
The location of the home, along with its 8,000-plus square feet, open floor plan, and two acres of landscaped backyard property, had sold them.
"The home is spacious yet comfortable with all amenities," Scott said, "from relaxing by the fireplace to sipping wine in the wine cellar."
The Scotts enjoyed six years in the six bedroom, seven and a half baths property in the prestigious Montgomery County neighborhood, but have recently put the home on the market for $2,695,000. Scott is retiring as CFO of Comcast Cable after working there for 20 years, and is moving to Sarasota, Fl. with his wife and youngest child.
Scott was only the third homeowner of the property, which was built in 1998 by E.B. Mahoney – well-known builders in the area who have constructed many other luxury homes on the Main Line.
When the Scotts moved in they immediately saw opportunities to make it their own, as parts of the home were still unfinished. The first thing they did was revitalize the library, which was originally a large empty room with a bay window.
"We had a local cabinet maker build Mahogany bookcases, armoire, cabinets for display and storage, as well as custom paneling and coffered ceiling," Scott said. "We installed a gas fireplace, and added stained glass at the top of each window."
Another major undertaking the Scotts took on was constructing a wine cellar in the basement, which Scott says is his and his wife's favorite room in the house.
"It's really set up nicely for entertaining," he said.
Scott says he and his wife were inspired from a recent visit to Tuscany when they designed the cellar. It has rough wall finishes with built-in candle lighting, a rustic wood beamed ceiling, and cast iron light fixtures, which they say takes them "right back to Italy."
The basement also includes a newly renovated billiards room, movie theater and gym.
The backyard, which stretches nearly two acres, is set up in three tiers with steps connecting to each level; a walkout patio and sitting area on the first level, a playground and another sitting area on the second, and a hot tub, pool, and flat grassy area on the third.
"The setting and the grounds are really special," Scott said. "We just loved sitting out on that back deck around the pool area."
The home sits on top of a hill, which offers scenic views throughout the backyard. Scott describes the neighborhood as private and quiet, with a mix of new and older homes on large lots.
