Southern Land Co. plans to build a residential tower with several stories of lower-level retail on the long-vacant lot that it owns beside Rittenhouse Square, a company official said.

The 1911 Walnut project will include rental and for-sale units above copious underground parking, said Dustin Downey, director of multifamily development for the Nashville-based developer.

The building is being designed by Chicago's Solomon Cordwell Buenz, whose local credits include the Murano at 2101 Market St. and the The St. James at 700 Walnut St., Downey said.

Downey declined to discuss such details as the building's height and number of units ahead of its presentation to neighborhood groups and other area stakeholders, which will begin in the coming weeks.
