City officials are moving to acquire property along the Delaware River - through condemnation if necessary - for part of a planned 3.3-mile waterfront bike and walking trail.

The Philadelphia City Planning Commission voted Tuesday in favor of a motion to acquire title to a strip of land behind the Henry Stewart Co. wire rope business between Penn Treaty Park and SugarHouse Casino. The acquisition also must be approved by City Council.

Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger said at the hearing that public and private entities have failed in negotiations with the property's owner, the Henry J. Stewart Trust, to purchase the ribbon of land.

A message left for the owner was not immediately returned.
