A new Target store is expected to open in the Upper Roxborough section of Philadelphia next year.

The 47,000-square-foot store is planned for March in the Ivyridge shopping center, at Ridge Avenue and Domino Lane.

It will occupy a now-vacant storefront that used to house a Super Fresh supermarket, a spokeswoman with the New York-based Brixmor Property Group, which owns and operates the Ivyridge center, said Thursday.

Like three other Target stores scheduled to open in Center City and the Art Museum area - including one later this month - the Upper Roxborough store will be one of Target's "flexible-format" stores, which are slimmed down and cater to the urban customer.

In Center City, two of the new Target stores will open this year.

The 1126-28 Chestnut St. location is expected to open July 20, and the store at 1900 Chestnut St. is slated to open Oct. 5, a Target spokeswoman said by email Thursday.

Another Target store is projected to open in October 2017 at 2001 Pennsylvania Ave., where there is now a Whole Foods store, near the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The Upper Roxborough store is expected to offer, among other things, baby-care items, clothing for kids and adults, home decor, toys, sporting goods, grab-and-go groceries, health and beauty items, local sports teams' clothing and accessories, a pharmacy, and a place to pick up online orders.

The new stores are part of Target's expansion into urban areas and will be smaller than the retail giant's stores in typical suburban shopping centers.
